Overheating 100-amp meter base replaced in Apex

The meter base on this 1974 Apex home had been repaired more than once and was overheating at a loose jaw. We replaced it, reused the existing riser and subpanel feed to save the homeowner money, and the Town of Apex inspected the work.

The story

What the homeowner called about

The meter base had been “fixed” several times before and was now showing signs of overheating.

What we found

One of the jaws that holds the meter was very loose, causing a poor connection and excessive heat.

What we couldn't know until we opened it up

Just how bad the connection was. It's hard to judge with the meter still in place.

The options we gave them

Given the age of the unit and the earlier repair attempts, replacing it was the right call. We could reuse the existing riser and the feed to the subpanel, which saved the homeowner money.

What they chose, and why

The replacement.

We replaced what was failing and reused what was still good. The riser and subpanel feed stayed, and that kept the price down.
