What it usually means when lot lights fail

The pattern of what’s out tells us where to look before the lift arrives.

  • One pole or fixture is outUsually the lamp, ballast or LED driver in that head, or a failed connection at the top of the pole.
  • A whole row or the whole lot is darkPoints to what they share: the photocell or timer, a lighting contactor, a tripped breaker, or a fault in the underground wire between poles.
  • Lights cycle on and offThe classic sign of a metal halide or high-pressure sodium lamp at the end of its life, or a ballast on its way out.
  • Lights stay on during the dayA failed photocell or a timer that lost its schedule. Wasted power every daylight hour until it’s fixed.
  • Pole knocked down, leaning or rustedVehicle strikes, rusted bases and loose anchor bolts. The pole, base and wiring get made safe, then replaced.
  • Building lights and wall packs outWall packs, canopy and entrance lights on the building itself, often on the same controls as the lot.

LED upgrades

Why most lots are switching to LED

Metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures were the standard for decades. Every lamp change on a tall pole means a lift on site, and those lamps dim and shift color long before they finally fail.

When a fixture needs work anyway, converting it to LED is usually the better repair. We’ll tell you whether a retrofit in the existing housing or a new fixture makes more sense for your poles.

What changes with LED

  • Lower power bills. LED uses a fraction of the power of metal halide for the same light on the ground.
  • Fewer lift visits. LED lasts many times longer than the lamps it replaces.
  • Instant on. No warm-up, and no long wait to restrike after a power blip.
  • Whiter, more even light. Easier to see faces, plates and walkways, and better for security cameras.
  • Less light where you don’t want it. Directional fixtures keep light on the lot and out of neighbors’ windows.

Parking lot lighting questions

Why do my parking lot lights cycle on and off?

On metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures, cycling almost always means the lamp is at the end of its life, or the ballast is failing. It’s often the point where converting that fixture to LED makes more sense than another lamp.

Why are my lot lights on during the day?

A failed photocell or a timer that lost its schedule. It’s usually a quick repair, and it stops paying for power all day.

Should we retrofit to LED or replace the fixtures?

It depends on the condition of the fixtures and poles. A retrofit puts LED into the existing housing; a new fixture replaces the whole head. We’ll look at what you have and quote the option that makes sense for the lot.

How tall a pole can you reach?

We rent a lift sized to each job, so pole height isn’t a limit. Tell us roughly how tall your poles are when you call.

A car knocked down a pole. Can you replace it?

Yes. We make the wiring safe first, then replace the pole and base and restore the light.

Who owns my parking lot lights?

Most lots own their lights, and we can work on them. Some properties lease lighting from the power company; those are the utility’s to repair. Your power bill will show a lighting line if you lease them.

Do you work after hours?

Lot work is scheduled for when the lot is emptiest. For an emergency, like a pole down or exposed wiring, our 24/7 line reaches the on-call electrician, and existing commercial customers get priority.

Can you provide a certificate of insurance and a W-9?

Yes, the same day you ask.

Do you offer Net-30 terms?

Yes, if it’s agreed before the first job. Otherwise payment is due when the work is complete.

Where do you work?

Across Wake County and the Triangle from our shop in Fuquay-Varina: Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Morrisville, Wake Forest, Durham, Chapel Hill, Knightdale, Clayton and Angier.

Parking lot lighting is one part of our commercial work. We also handle building lighting, panels and three-phase service, data cabling and emergency light testing.
