Where we work in Chapel Hill
The oldest housing stock on our map
Chapel Hill has the oldest housing stock of any town we serve. About 37% of its homes were built before 1980 and more than half before 1990 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2023 5-year, table B25034). That shows up in our work: 60- and 100-amp services that were fine in 1965, Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, ungrounded two-prong outlets, aluminum branch wiring from the early 70s, and additions wired three different ways by three different owners.
So in Chapel Hill our first visit is usually a panel and service check, and the quote is written against what we actually find, not a guess from the curb. Newer homes out toward Southern Village and Meadowmont get the newer-home calls: EV chargers, generator interlocks, landscape lighting and the home theater we mentioned.
Chapel Hill is on Duke Energy Carolinas, the old Duke Power side of the company, rather than Duke Energy Progress like most of Wake County. Rural Orange County outside town is largely Piedmont Electric. Either way the install is the same; the rebate paperwork is not.
Electrical permits inside the Town of Chapel Hill go through the Town’s Building & Development Services office on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. We pull them and book the inspections for you, and the permit fee is its own line on your quote.
